"When I was reading through my grandmother’s letters, I came across a small envelope with ½ a teaspoon of ground cardamom written in blue cursive on the outside. I had forgotten that she had mailed the recipe along with this important ingredient. I wonder if she didn’t think I could find it at the store in Olympia? The brown powdery spice was still inside, wrapped in a square of tin foil."

"I burnt my chicken adobo last night. I already figured out the miscalculation: I added too much brown sugar to the marinade. Or maybe it was because I forgot to add more water before simmering. But really the biggest mistake was that I was too greedy."

"I stood at the top of the stairs as I inhaled and said; 'I smell popcorn' in my seven year old tiny voice. I was tucked in bed yet woke to my favorite scent. Dad was making himself a bowl of buttery popcorn and my nose got a whiff and I was ready."
